Number 2 of Lunar Tetrad

I’ve been watching and reading about the Lunar Tetrad. It’s commonly being called the Blood Moon. I mistakenly called my first one a solar eclipse. I’ve corrected it. A lunar tetrad is four total lunar eclipses in a row. There was also discussion with this blood moon eclipse that Uranus was going to be visible with the right lens or a telescope. My camera lens was unable to capture it. I learned a trick once on how to get a great zoom shot. I didn’t have what I needed to do it this time however. There was a hunter [prepping for an early daylight hunt] who showed up and shared that He used his binoculars for the zoom shot before. I’ll have to get a set of binoculars.

Here you’ll see a sequence of the moon going into the eclipse until you see the Blood Moon. I got up a little later than I wanted to at 2 a.m. and Paul drove us up into the mountains to have a clearer view. The eclipse had already begun before I got my camera set up.

I was also able to capture a shot of Orion’s Belt that turned out blurry. I was totally distracted by activity surrounding our dog and the a hunter. I’ll create a more complete capture on the next in the series of Tetrad Moons. The next two are:

  • 2015:
    Total lunar eclipse: April 4
    Total lunar eclipse: September 28

All in all, I’m happy with this.

And There Was Light

Image of the Day!

City Night Lights-Mtn Light Trails

A new addition to my art collection.

Behind the scenes for the making of this image.

It was reported that Sept 9th, 2014 would be giving us the last of the Super Moons. I was on a quest to make some art of this Super Moon.

We drove into the mountains along California State Highway 18 near Rim of the World. Once we reached the area the city lights were beckoning me to make some art.

I pulled out my camera and tripod. I had to ascend some rock mounds by the parking area to get a good view.

I captured the moon. I didn’t like those captures so much. I started shooting frames of the city lights below. I thought I wanted to do a pano stitched piece. (That didn’t work out like I wanted.)

We brought our four-legged kid with. My husband was walking around with her. I turned to look for him in the dark… I’m pretty blind at night… So, I was watching for the white of the dog and the light on my husband’s phone. I knew he’d pull it out and give his hand a try at some night shots. I saw him off to the West. As I did I noticed that there was a line of cars rounding the mountainside road. I did a couple of quick long exposures of the cars.

The next day when I started processing the images I noticed a light trail in the above city image. I layered one of the other light trail images to define the light trail.

I decided not to perfectly center everything because the lay of the land isn’t perfectly straight and center with the shapes and curves.

Series – Celestial

Inspired by Brooke Shaden’s art, Promoting Passion.

When we moved to Southern California I was in awe of how visible the solar system is from where we live. We like to go for night rides [motorcycle rides]. When we get up in the mountains the view becomes even more clear. I’ve always loved the moon and stars. It wasn’t until now that I had a good enough camera to capture them.

Below is the start of a series of the celestial view as I see it. The first image is an artistic take on that exact view when I saw it. The second image was made on the same night. The third image is of the Blood Moon with a dot of Mars peering on from above. And the fourth is the August Super Moon.

I’m still working on these. This is where I am with them at present. I’m hoping to come up with more pieces to create a series of 6 or 9 pieces. I started this series in February this year.

Promoting Passion and Inspiration

We all need inspiration from time to time. Heck, most of the time. We can be very distracted by everything around us, or even from within us.

One of my most favorite inspirations comes from a photographer that I love: Brooke Shaden. I first learned of her through the CreativeLive.com folks where Brooke taught an online class for them about Mastering Your Craft. She inspires me. Below is a video she created to promote passion, the name of her website. I love that. Also, if you’re a Winnie-The-Pooh fan like me, you’ll love this video. Watch is and be inspired.

Image of the Day – Malibu Sunset Silhouette

It was the Sunday evening a couple of days before New Year’s Day 2014. As like most weekends my husband and I go for a motorcycle ride through some nearby mountains and canyons. He had just given me a new camera for Christmas. I wanted to go out and make some art with it. I wanted to find the perfect location to shoot from. This was somewhat of a momentous occasion for me. In a few days we would be celebrating a new year in a new place. It was only 7 months since we moved to Southern California. I’d never lived here. I had traveled here on a trip once, to Disneyland, with my family when I was a little girl. Sunrises and sunsets make me giddy for some reason. I love the feeling and emotions conjured up. That warm fuzzy feeling. Don’t you?

I love nature and all that entails. Many of the images I post will most likely be landscapes. That will include transportation of all sorts, animals, plants-flowers, sunrises and sunsets. I will never post images of people because of the liability involved. People images will only be shared with the people who are in the images, i.e. portraits, weddings, events, etc. I do have one public image made in Seattle a while ago. I’ve been debating within myself whether to post it up or not. Should I? Comment below to let me know your thoughts. I value your input.

Image of the Day – The Water Fountain

Today’s image is from Seattle’s wonderful architecture. The history of Seattle is very rich. Click here to read what one blogger posts about it.

My husband, and I spent 15 years together in the Seattle-Tacoma Metro region. We spent a lot of time in downtown Seattle. I am fascinated with the rich architecture and history of Seattle. When we went on our walks I’d find myself standing in shops at book stands thumbing through historical publications scanning over the images I saw.

I love history and culture. On several occasions we’d walk up/down The Harbor Steps. On one afternoon we were ascending to discover a film crew was using one of the eateries that lined the steps. We stood listening and watching. At one point we were shooed back out of the sight of the cameras. I heard people who were extras in the scene being directed here and there to be in place. We were too far away from the directors to hear clearly what they were doing. It was all very intriguing.

Image of the Day – Tacoma Port Marina

Today’s image comes to you from Tacoma, WA. It is another one that I made while on the Photo walk with new friends. I love water and watercraft. When we were walking around town we came to one of the city’s parks near the port. I looked over the edge of the concrete wall and saw this image and had to capture it. I love the colors and the different sizes of boats.

Image of the Day – Upstanding

Today’s image is another from Tacoma, WA. I didn’t explain this before with any of the other images I shared from Tacoma. Several years ago my husband and I lived in Tacoma for a brief period. We both started using Google Plus while it was in its infancy. Over a period of about a year the plus grew to mass proportions. It’s a very popular platform for photographers. I quickly grew my own community of photographers. I even met some that were local, sort of. One thing that has gained mass popularity on the plus is Photo walks. There are organized photo walks as well as impromptu photo walks. I’m more prone to do impromptu photo walks.

In October 2010, I posted up that I wanted to do a photo walk in Tacoma, WA. I invited people to attend. On our meetup day there were three of us that showed up. It was partly sunny/cloudy. As you can see in the image below.

I love meeting new friends. So, we commenced walking around Tacoma and snapping shots of things that interested us. There were some awesome images created that day as well as friendships. I’ve since moved to the L.A. Metro Region in California. I’m looking forward to meeting up with fellow photographers to do a photo walk. I’ve met a few people on the plus in the region.

Image of the Day – Intrigue

Today’s image is full of intrigue and mystery. The shadows. The dark abyss in the doorway. The person sitting in the window. The windows. What’s happening in this place? What is the person in the window talking about on the phone? That person could be anyone of us. What is that in the windows? What is around the corner? You tell me. Image of the Day! – Moon & Stars

This is another of my personal projects. I made this piece in February this year. I’m fascinated with the solar system. It was my first attempt at long exposure. I accomplished exactly what I was trying for. To capture the stars and of course the moon. However, this piece is a composite. In order to get the stars like you see them I couldn’t use the moon on the exact night because there was some sort of glowing haze that made the moon look blurry. I used the moon in this piece from a few nights previous when I was playing with the settings in my camera and experimenting.

So, today’s post is inspired by the fact that we will be seeing a full moon tonight at approximately 9:15 p.m. PST. I’ll be setting up my camera on the tripod to capture some moon shots. I may even talk Paul, my husband, into driving up into the mountains where the city lights won’t interfere. We’ll see!

Imagine, someday we’ll be travelling to the moon. In some of the sci-fi space shows the moon is inhabited. That would be quite an experience, wouldn’t it?
